A senior colleague of mine once asked me are you happy in your job. Does it make you content. I did not know the answer back then. I thought about it for a long while.
Happiness and contentment. The two of the biggest desires of human beings and the two of the most difficult to achieve.
I told her happiness is not an option life gives you each day. It’s a choice you make every day.
to overlook the sad, to be able to see beyond imperfections, to be able to cross hurdles , to see failure in the eye and yet not be deterred from your path, to be determined to choose what you want to achieve and strive hard towards making it achievable and sustainable. To know pain yet smile and to know hurt yet not cry. You have to choose to forgive to forget to let go to not give up to walk even though it tires you. To be happy when you are having a dull day.
A fellow doctor I know Is suffering from cancer which is extensively spread. The treatment she was offered was only palliative to decrease pain etc. Her lifespan left is short. Yet she refuses to take leave from work. She visits a the hospital for chemotherapy post her duty hours. She is weak and sick yet she chooses work each day. I asked her why does she tire herself and not take rest at home. She said I do not wish to let disease bog me down and prevent me from doing my karma. It makes me happy to help patients and be able to provide them cure. I may succumb physically to the disease but I choose to be do what provides me happiness. I salute that lady.
Why are we sad? Is it because we are hopeless about solutions to our problems or because we consciously do not wish to move over these problems and try to be happy. Every question does not have an answer in the book of life. But do you stop searching. Do you make misery your everyday goal. If something starts making you constantly unhappy be wise to move on and let go. You cant hang on to unhappiness. That’s not the right choice to make.
You choose to smile while you continue frantically searching for solutions for your problems. While you continually work to achieve what you wish to. While you continually walk in life. Just hum a song or whistle and smile. And say to yourself this too shall pass and see the magic happen.
A happy state is not a destination you will arrive at one day , it’s a journey you undertake each minute of life.
